Meirāni Kalpaka Primary School

The first primary school in Visagals (at that time in Meirāni parish of Cēsis district) was established by Voldemārs Lūsis in 1860. From 1892 to 1895 Oskars Kalpaks, the first Commander-in-Chief of Latvian armed forces, studied in the school. Summer 1940 after the arrival of the Red Army the school was deprived of Kalpaks name and his museum was destroyed. From 1946 to 1953 the prominent soloist of Latvian National Opera Jānis Zābers attended the school. In honour of him for more than 15 years the boys’ vocalist competition “The nightingales of the Aiviekste” is being organized in the school.

In 1992 the school regained its former title – Mairāni Kalpaka Primary School. In the school full attention is given to students’ patriotic upbringing by organizing various events in remembrance of Oskars Kalpaks.

In 2009 the “Meirānieši” society was established in the school. It carries out different projects in order to multiply opportunities for student and adult interest and leisure activities in Lubāna municipality.

In the academic year 2013/2014 the school employs 15 teachers. The school provides an opportunity to stay in the boarding facilities as well as a multiform education of interest. Lubāna pre-school education establishment “Rūķīši”

The establishment was established in October, 1979.

13 experienced teachers help the children to contribute self-formation, develop physical, intellectual and creative skills, care about their health and prepare them for future education. On a daily basis a teacher-speech therapist, a gym teacher and a music teacher busies the children. The acquired skills are even more developed in various activities - drawing, counting, music lessons as well as playing games, dressing up etc.

The employees of “Rūķīši” in co-operation with the parents of children have created a favorable environment for the development of children, their interests and creative self-expression. New training tools are purchased and the material base is updated regularly. Various events are organized for children and their parents: exhibitions, open days, afternoons of conversation, celebrations etc.

National holidays are celebrated in the pre-school education establishment, thereby creating patriotic feelings, respect for the national symbols and love to one’s hometown. In order to encourage children’s interest in sports, also sporting activities are organized. Our teachers are skillful actors and they use to play roles of the children’s favorite fairy tale characters. Thereby they try to teach them how to distinguish the good from the bad, and contribute the development of ethic feelings. The children also acquire drama. A pre-school dance group is also active in “Rūķīši”.

In May 2013 a teachers’ and parents’ association “Heart to Heart” (“No sirds uz sirdi”) was established. Together with the pensioners association “Hope” (“Cerība”) the project “Preservation and Popularization of the Cultural Heritage in Lubāna region and its surroundings” was carried out. In October 2013, by participating in the charity project “Good Works” (“Labie darbi”), “Rūķīši” received financial support for carrying out their desire – project “Creation of a sports field, play ground and recreation area in the pre-school education establishment “Rūķīši””.
