Lubāna municipality was formed on October 16th, 2007 by merging the municipalities of Indrāni parish and Lubāna town. The centre of the municipality is Lubāna town, located in Eastern Vidzeme (in the Lubāns plain of the Eastern Latvian Lowland). The distance from Lubāna to Madona is 42 km, to Gulbene – 54 km, to Balvi – 60 km, to Rēzekne – 94 km, to Jēkabpils – 104 km, to the capital city Riga – 208 km. Lubāna attained city status on January 30th, 1992.
